The hybrid character of autobiographical texts in Recuerdos de 30 Anos (1810-1840) (Memories of 30 Years) by Jose Zapiola , shows an ambivalence in the literary and historical aspects. The author here qualifies this Chilean autobiographical work as an “Adamic Subject” , which does not belong to the predominant class. In 1850, Zapiola paticipates in the so-called “Sociedad de la Igualdad” (“Equality Society”). There is discussion on Zapiola’s abdication from the ideals of the “Equality Society” and its subsequent adherence to the most conservative sectors of the Chilean church and society. Interesting details about his education and family life are included.
