Trazar el territorio y reinventar el significado tradicional constituye la preocupacion central de Nilima Sheikh, quien ocupa una posicion importante en la escena plastica de la India contemporanea. Sus obras representan la realidad de la cultura India a traves de vocabularios que declaran su propia condicion identitaria y su forma nacional de ver, sentir y reaccionar, reconociendo la tradicion clasica India y adaptando una tematica vigente a lo largo de toda su historia social y cultural: las limitaciones de las mujeres. Este ensayo intenta explorar el dialogo entre temas contemporaneos y lenguajes de la tradicion mediante el trabajo de Sheikh.AbstractTo recreate the territory and reinvent the traditional meaning constitutes the central preoccupation of Nilima Sheikh, who occupies an important position in India’s contemporary plastic scene. Her work represents the reality of Indian culture based on vocabularies that state her own identity and national point of view, and her feelings and reactions, acknowledging India´s classical tradition and adapting what has been a persistent theme throughout its whole cultural and social history: the limitations of women. This essay intends to explore the dialogue between contemporary themes and traditional artistic languages in Sheikh´s work.
