As a first step in the transition from Social Projection towards Social Responsibility, the EIA decided to develop a diagnosis of the rural settlements surrounding the new university campus (Las Palmas, Perico, Pantanillo), in order to be aware of their necessities and propose productive projects to generate a positive impact on the community. In this sense, it is developed a qualitative investigation, which provides general information about the settlement, in this specific case Pantanillo, and goes deeply into the economic field and the main productive activities. Such information is the source to find Pantanillo’s major economic problem, which is represented by the lack of resources to satisfy the current and growing requirements of the population. This problem is caused, essentially, by a series of difficulties in the development of the agricultural activity and by the lack of community organization. Therefore, it is noted the necessity of supporting the productive process of the inhabitants with projects regarding quality improvements, product commercialization and industrialization, and community participation. Additionally, it is seen a great interest of the population, which is as well a necessity, of improving their academic education in subjects such as agronomy, management, basic economic concepts, among others. On the other side, the mission statement and the study plan designed by the EIA determine its capacity to act in favor of the current situation of the settlements. However, it is found that the best alternative for the university is to join forces with the Envigado Municipality and the JAC (Community Action Council) to look for the same purpose. Currently, the EIA is capable of assuming the management of some projects already proposed by these entities. In addition, it is suggested the development of some complementary ideas, such as: Put into practice the Game Theory to educate the peasants in the offer and demand subject, making them realize that the maximum benefit is not always achieved when taking the most of the arable land. Avoid displacement of the population by relocating them in a place built under the concept of “ecovillage”, which favors the environment conservation. Additionally, as a first step to obtain an ecologically sustainable place, it is proposed to implement a recycling program to provide organic manure. Finally, it is highlighted that the achievement of Social Responsibility requires the whole EIA commitment, which includes guaranteeing the continuity of thesis, such as this one, thought for the community as well as the university benefit.
