This article aims to generate data to establish a proposal for a cross-border integration region among f ive countries that share territorial and maritime borders in the Caribbean: Colombia (San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina), Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Jamaica. A characterization of the border area was compiled by examining common geohistorical processes, settlement dynamics, and the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious elements that consolidated the cultural unity of this Caribbean region. As a result of this characterization, a cross-border community was identif ied that, despite the divisions established by the f ive countries, justif ies regional integration.
