Traditionally, blood banks in the country are attached to health institutions as public hospitals who in their eagerness to stock up on blood for their own consumption, do not implement specific studies that show its profitability and market potential being lost because of lack of appropriate strategies and processes, this is the case of the only two blood banks in the city of Pereira. The operation of a regional Hemocentro will lower costs in processing the blood as a result of increased production scale, will also ensure that all blood components processed meet all necessary standards of safety, and shall be constituted as medical necessities and increased availability. Since the unit of blood are obtained various blood components, red cells, fresh frozen plasma (PFC), concentrated platelets and cryoprecipitate, which allows each patient to transfuse the component you need. The separation from them is done by differential centrifugation. The units of blood drawn after strict screening of the donor, are subjected to rigorous laboratory testing. Blood components are stored at temperatures that are best for their function and safety: red blood cells are stored at temperatures of 4 + / - 2 degrees Celsius to 35 days with CPD-Adenine preserved as an anticoagulant; PFC at temperatures <-18 ° C up to a year and platelet con centrates to 22 + / - 2 degrees Celsius in continuous agitation until 5 days. The foundations for the indication transfusion proved to be weak, there are significant variations in their use even for the same procedure.
