Introduccion: el oxido de etileno es un excelente metodo para la esterilizacion de materiales termosensibles, frecuentemente utilizados en al ambito quirurgico; igualmente es un gas toxico que puede traer complicaciones para los trabajadores de la salud, los pacientes y el medio ambiente, si no se lleva a cabo el proceso de esterilizacion con las medidas adecuadas para evitar danos colaterales producidos por la exposicion prolongada. El objetivo de esta investigacion es caracterizar el uso de este metodo de esterilizacion en la region (Eje Cafetero y Norte del Valle). Materiales y metodos: esta sera una investigacion cuantitativa, descriptiva, ya que se pretende caracterizar la aplicacion de las normas legales vigentes, para la utilizacion de este tipo de agente quimico, en las instituciones de salud participantes. La informacion sera recolectada con un instrumento disenado y validado especificamente para este fin; se creara una base de datos en Excel y los resultados seran analizados en Epiinfo 2002. Resultados: se espera conocer el manejo que se le da a los procesos de esterilizacion con oxido de etileno; el conocimiento que se tiene de este producto y los equipos utilizados en este proceso, en las instituciones de salud del Eje Cafetero y Norte del Valle y su impacto medioambiental; concienciar tanto a las personas como a las instituciones que trabajan con este agente, del dano que pueden llegar a causar, y medir costo beneficio. Abstract Introduction: the oxide of ethylene is an excellent method for the sterilization of thermosensitive materials frequently used in to the surgical area, but simultaneously this one is a toxic gas that can bring complications for the workers of the health, the patients and the environment, if the process of sterilization is not carried out by the measures adapted to avoid collateral damages produced by the long exhibition. The aim of this investigation is to characterize the use of this method of sterilization in the Coffee axis and North of the Valley. Materials and methods: this one will be a quantitative, descriptive investigation since there tries to be characterized the application of the legal in force procedure for the use of this type of chemical agent in the institutions of health participants. The information will be gathered by an Instrument designed and validated specifically for this end. A database was created in Excel that will be fed by the investigators and the information they will be analyzed in Epiinfo 2002. Results: one expects to know the managing that gives him to the processes of sterilization with oxide of ethylene, the knowledge that is had of this product and the equipments used for this process in the Institutions of health of the Coffee Axis and North of the Valley and his environmental impact. To arouse both to the persons and to the institutions that work with this agent of the damage that they can manage to cause and measure cost I am of benefit.
