This article was written to provide an updated review of elements of Distance Education (DE), his relationship withe-learning and learning process of students inside of Information Society (IS). The article describes the evolution ofDE and e-learning concepts, the relevant features of each one and characterization process of learning. Furthermore,the most prominent theories were presented, their advantages and disadvantages in the learning process. The reviewconcludes that there are not unified definitions for DE and e-learning, however the main characteristics of them arepreserved over time and which were considered in the new definition. Finally the IS allowed the use and evolutionof Information and Communications Technology like a tools for improve learning process, especially in DE.
