This paper is an attempt to associate the concepts of foresight and strategic management of knowledge and their role within Colombian research groups (coined here as GRIN). It is emphasized that these concepts should be integrated into policies and strategies to be adopted by the local universities to meet their objectives for research, technological development and innovation, and the synergies to be generated both in the social and productive sectors. It is proposed that foresight should be associated with specific actions within systems of competitive intelligence and technology surveillance to identify the most relevant variables on which the GRIN technology can track, prior to technology foresight exercises.
