Popularization” is an unaroidable problem in the study of Zhang Ailing. Whether do we understand the implied meaning of popularization, it will directly affect us to appraise Zhang Ailing's creative works, give her a final verdict in the 20th Century Chinese literature history. We can not decy there is a subtle relation between popularization and the family worship complex, which exist in her own unconsicous, but at the same time, we also should know that popularization was a kind of life choices during the days under ruling of the puppet Japanese colonical government. Zhang Ailing was not a writer who “Popularization for Popularization”. Among her narration of Common people and things, she placed her forceful cultural criticism and desolate life experiences and understanding in troubled days. It can not be said to have been understood Zhang Ailing if we could not understand the meaning of popularization. With this narration pattern of popularization, Zhang Ailing pursued some kind of tragic aesthetic effect—in contrast to the comic's. Through appreciation of the ugly to reach appreciation of the beauty, and then formed a contrasting aesthetic realm of desolate.
