This research paper is the result of the project work entitled “The role of communication for social change in the reconstruction of the social tissue of the region of Montes de Maria and the Perija” work product of young researchers into Social Communication Journalism program in the Universidad Autonoma del Caribe; whose objective was to validate the calling power of communication as a social stage and proposed its role as a generator of cultural transformations from the collective action of communities that decide to reconfigure their contexts, in the region of Montes de Maria and the Perija in the Colombian Caribbean that have suffered the adverse effects of armed conflict. The article addressed the transits in the uses of communication in its supportive role of culture, going from conception of communication for development to its impact on social change and empowerment. The research was qualitative and with participatory techniques worked under collective communication with the municipalities of San Jacinto (Bolivar), Ovejas (Sucre); and Manaure (Cesar). The results found that communities are required to publicize the suffering and impunity for crimes to decant grieving process, re-learn how to communicate to reunite on their similarities and differences; and create opportunities for alternative meeting to unite their notions of future, self-confidence and peace.
