Biological diversity, or biodiversity, refers to the variety of species and ecosystems on earth and the processes of which they are part. It consists of three elements: species diversity, ecosystem diversity and genetic diversity. Biodiversity is the support of human societies on the ecological, economic, cultural and spiritual levels. In this article the biodiversity of the Colombian Pacific as a potential for the regional sustainable development and some approaches to its management are discussed.
