Folate is in the core of one-carbon metabolism (OCM), serving as raw material for this biosynthetic pathway essential in DNA synthesis, repair and diverse methylation reactions. Dietary folate is the only source for mammalian OCM requirements and variations in its levels affect intermediary molecules such as the amino acid homocysteine, which is known to have toxic effects at high concentrations. Alterations in OCM is thought to promote apoptosis in nervous system by different ways (i) increasing levels of extracellular homocysteine, what further excitotoxicity in neurons |1,2|; (ii) altering methylation |3| and (iii) influencing the DNA synthesis through precursor imbalance |4|.
