The problem of maximizing the power output of photovoltaic cells is an opportunity to develop classroom p rojects and research in engineering programs. This article describes the electrical characteristics of photovoltaic cells based on mathematical models and datasheet information. In addition, the solar cells behavior is approximated to ideal I-V and PV curves using straight lines for better insight. It also explains the problem of obtaining maximum electrical power from solar panel, by using both current-voltage and power-voltage curves; the solution is based on load matching by using power converters as transformers when the load resistance is different to the optimal resistance. Both the problem and the solution are presented using a pedagogical approach, in such way that undergraduate engineering student are encouraged to develop project in photovoltaic systems.
