Abstract By way of introduction to the 1563 document on Muisca ceremonies in Ubaque, a chronological account is given of the Spanish Conquest, and the event is put into the context of the colonial era. Through an animal fable, we are invited to change the methods that Muisca ethnohistory has used for analysing the chronicles and archive documents. It is suggested that anyone who uses texts like the Ubaque document does not limit himself to extracting and copying quotations, but rather analyses the colonial context in which those texts are set.
