Objective: To evaluate the behavior of mortality and nosocomial infections in two Intensive Care Units from Barranquilla. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, prospective, single cohort study was designed. Total and adjusted mortality (later than 48 hours) were calculated in all population for each APACHE II range in 466 patients admitted in the Intensive Care Units from Hospital Universidad del Norte and Clinica de la Costa. Additionally, nosocomial infections rates were calculated for each 1.000 days of exposure to oral-tracheal tube, urinary and central venous catheter. Results: APACHE II average was 15.1. Majority of patients were in APACHE II range between 6 and 24. Severe sepsis and septic shock were the first cause for admission, followed by acute heart failure, complicated abdominal post-surgical state and acute coronary syndromes. Total mortality was 24.9% and adjusted was 12.6%. Incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia, central venous catheter-associated sepsis and urinary catheter-associated sepsis were 10.6, 3.9 and 2.7 respectively per 1000 days of exposure to each device. Conclusion : Mortality and nosocomial infections frequency were similar or better than reported in developing countries and developed countries.
