Abstract:

This paper studies the composition and the structure of the French Council of State created by NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, and the manner in which it operated. In order to obtain the pertinent information, the head researcher and the students that officiated as assistant researchers tapped exclusively documentary sources. Several texts on the Revolutionary period were consulted, especially those related with the discussions held at the National Assembly, where the division of power was one of the central subjects of debate. Basically, two methods were resorted to in this research: historical and comparative. The three most important conclusions were the following 1. Justice was the revolutionaries’ most argued issue, which reveals that they were strongly influenced by Classical Greek thought. 2. Napoleon Bonaparte appointed to the Council of State the influential people who had been the most conspicuous ones during the Revolution. 3. Napoleon Bonaparte himself stood at the apex of the structure of the Council of State.
