Precision agriculture is a modern system of crop management through which different technologies are used in a sustainable manner to compile, analyze and handle soil, weather and agronomic condition data that affect the crop in a specific time point. The objective is to support decision making in order to increase yield, lower production costs and reduce environmental impacts. In Colombia, there are different successful experiences in crop management using precision agriculture methodologies in sugar cane, banana, forest plantations and others. In the oil palm crop, plantation management using precision agriculture concepts has the potential to cause great impact in the reduction of costs and resources optimization. In this paper, concepts and positive aspects of precision agriculture are reviewed, going through different crops to oil palm crop. The information about precision agriculture and oil palm in Malaysia is summarized, with especial reference to research results presented in PIPOC 2007. Finally, the experiences using precision agriculture on oil palm crop in Colombia are reviewed and it is presented to the Colombian oil palm growers what constitutes the precision agriculture program at Cenipalma.
