Los Cobardes range is located on the Southwestern part of the Santander department and belongs to the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. The topography of the area is very steep with elevations up to 3.200 m. The rocks are mainly continental and marine sediments of Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous age. These rocks belong to the Giron, Arcabuco, Cumbre and Rosablanca units according to the Santander area nomenclature. The Giron and Arcabuco formations (Jurassic) are in contact with the Cumbre and/or Rosablanca formations (Lower Cretaceous) by an angular unconformity, wich indicates a compressional tectonic force at the end of the Jurassic. Structurally the area is a wide anticline, extending 60 km N-S, and plunging to the south. Several reverse faults (high angle) are bounding both flanks of the anticline.
