We describe the cytogenetics of the mountain paca, A. teczenowskii, which inhabits the mountains of Colombia. It was established that A. taczanowskii has a diploid number of 78 chromosomes with fairly large amounts of constitutive heterochromatin and remarkable C-band polymorphism. These results permit the differentiation of individuals and may shed light on the family status of the genus Agouti.
