The development objective of the Rural Competitiveness Project for Honduras is to contribute to increase productivity and profitability among organized rural small-scale producers through their participation in productive alliances. This environmental assessment (EA) document / evaluacion del impacto ambiental aims at addressing appropriate mitigation and management measures to minimize impacts that may develop during the implementation of the project, including : deforestation; erosion; storage and excessive use of agro-chemicals; pest management practices; loss of natural habitats (fauna) as a result of improper liquid and solid waste disposal. Suggested mitigation measures includes : develop a forestry management plan for better control of forestry fires, reforestation and capacity building training workshops for park rangers; trees and natural vegetation must be protected from damages caused by the expansion of the agricultural frontier, particularly with the expansion of coffee plantations; develop an educational campaign for assistance to tourists in their needs while touring natural reserves, particularly, establishing procedures for solid waste management, protection to water sources, and archeological and historical landmarks; and finally, compliance with Honduras's environmental policies and regulations, institutional and regulatory framework of participating institutions, international agreements relative to the protection of the environment of which Honduras is a signatory, and compliance with the Bank's environmental protection (OP 4.01), natural habitats (OP 4.04), pest management (OP 4.09), cultural property (OP 4.11), involuntary resettlement (OP 4.12) and, indigenous peoples (OP 4.10) operational safeguards directives.
