The number of pigs born and live weights at 1,21 and 56 days were analyzed in 480 litters (4265 pigs) born in the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario at Palmira during 1981 -1987. Repetibility, correlations and selection indexes were calculated for the 3 characters. Heritability (h 2 ) values were estimated using a computer program developed by the first author. Significant differences were found for sex, year born; sire and lit1er size. Breed effect was significant only for birth weight. Estimated values of h2 were: a) half sibs -weight: at birth 0.38,21 d =0.23; 56d = 0.41-litter size: at birthO.23; 21d=0.17; 56d=0.27. b) Regression-weights: at birth 0.21; 21 d=O.33; 56d=0.23 - litter size: at birth 0.32; 21 d=0 .19; 56d =0.39. 'Genetic and phenotypic correlations ranged from low to medium. Repetibilities were high. Calculated selection index was: Index =0.34 X l + 18X2. Where X l = birth weight; X2 =56 days weight. Genetic advance, applying this index, could be 5 % and 342 % percent larger for birth weight and weaning weight respectively.
