Abstract:

This article was aimed at identifying research studies of psychological harassment in the workplace following a quantitative approach with a particular focus on professors, nurses, and physicians on a national and international level from 1990 to 2009. Methodology: A systematic search was conducted of electronic and printed sources of information in specialized scientific journals. An analytical matrix was designed with the following variables: title of the document, materials and methods, type of study, findings, discussion and identification of gaps in the studies. 115 articles on psychological harassment in the workplace were collected, and a selection was made of 50 titles that met the initially established criteria. The articles were reviewed, classified, and coded quantitatively and specifically based on the author's own findings and gaps. The findings focused on aspects associated with the personality and psychological aspects of the individuals being harassed and the abuser, consequences on the victims' health and work, victims' perceptions of the abuser, victims' actions against the abuser, organizational environments that encourage harassment, organizational and familial predictors of harassment, effects on the organization and, lastly, the impact on nurses, physicians, and professors, and mobbing. The discussions and conclusions of these reviews confirmed that the working environment at universities and healthcare institutions where professors, nurses, and physicians work may in deed have certain individual and organizational conditions which are conducive to psychological harassment in the workplace.
