Writing centers are a form of collaborative work looking for the development of writing skills, especially in college. They were created in North American universities, but now we can find them almost all over the world. The article takes a closer look at the historic evolution that these centers have had since they appeared in other regions and how they reached the current status, particularly in the United States. In Latin America some writing centers have started to be established, especially in last five years, with different approaches, according to their type. So far, the evolution of writing centers in the region is presented by comparing the reasons that have led to their creation, the way they did in North America, and the current status of both. The article attempts to provide an approach to the concept of a writing center and the concept of peer tutoring, which is the core of these centers. As a conclusion, not final because the history is being written, at the end some forward thinking about what this form of education may involve to the development of higher education in Latin American is given. While there is a development, it still is in his consolidation phase, so they are given every chance to generate an academic community around these centers.
