This paper describes the synchronization procedure executed by an UMTS user’s equipment (UE). This work studies the specific location in the coverage area where the UE is most likely to be served by three base stations (BS). In this scenario, the identification of the best serving BS becomes a difficult task due to intercell interference and the user’s mobility. It was required to define the “boundary area” in terms of the received signal strength for the mobile. Next, several procedures were implemented in order to assure an acceptable quality for the acquisition process. Performance evaluation was done, achieving an effective improvement in both the probability of detection and the outage area of the system.
