The present text is intended to estimate the monthly inflation of food items around Armenia (Colombia) and to compare it with the results obtained in the same period by the National Administrative Department of Estatistics (DANE). For such aim, 100 processed and non processed food items were selected. Five supermarkets around the city were chosen and 20 food items that were bought in two occasions, were assigned to each one of them; the first about the end of February and the second about the end of March 2013. After that, the food items were grouped according to the encoding of the group of food items at the DANE and they were assigned a pondering to calculate price variation, taking as data base the ones of the first purchase. The main conclusion that was obtained is that methodological variations and the goods studied in the calculation of the price index of the Consumer (PIH), joined to the circumstantial social standings, may generate distortions in the results.
