SUMMARY Two culture media for the production of Clostridium septicum alpha toxin were evaluated, finding an optimal secretion in an enriched medium. The alpha toxin's lethal and necrotizing characteristics were corroborated. After toxin production evaluation, a bacterin toxoid was prepared with established inactivation and formulation parameters. A potency test was carried out by a toxin-antitoxin neutralization test, standardized in 1998 by the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA), finding that the bacterin toxoid induces the production of an immune response in vaccinated rabbits which can be valued as antitoxin with 2.5 IU.
