Objective: This research pretended to generate a current approach about what physiotherapy does nowadays; identified the contextual needs according to the educational requirements of professionals in the metropolitan area of the Aburra Valley, with the goal of stimulate the enlargment of the carreer in the scientific, business and educational areas. Methods: Two surveys were performed addressed to physiotherapist and employers as users of their services. The population of this research consisted in 135 Physiotherapist and 35 employers of the metropolitan area in the Aburra Valley, with the aim of identify their socio-demographic profile, educational level and contextual requirements of their jobs. Results: In terms of formal education information professional specialization and master's degree predominates. In non-formal education the priority is to be certified. By observing the contextual qualification requirements disciplining the required level of training by type of company it was observed that more than 60% of the companies concerned not require trained personnel at the graduate level, or level of no formal education. Conclusions: This research provides objective information about the status of physiotherapist in the metropolitan area of Aburra Valley, pointing out the postgraduate education they have done, their preferred areas of performance and fields where they actually work. Regionally, our context does not know in a broad and clear way, which are the possibilities of performance of the physiotherapist; that is why there is a limited view of the professional performance and people tend to think that this is limited to basic levels of clinical intervention (therapeutic and rehabilitation mainly). Thus is not expected that these professionals will prepared in different areas other than the clinical performance if neither is mandatory the training beyond the undergraduate.
