The paper herein is intended to outline the development and influence of the Basle Committee on current banking surveillance. Indeed, this report encompasses aspects regarding the following issues of said Committee: (i) origin; (ii) management bodies; (iii) procedure for the adoption of recommendations issued by said Committee; and, (iv) most relevant works of the same.In addition to the study of the rol of the Basle Committee in banking surveillance, the paper also includes a study of the concepts of supevision and regulation, and their connection with the works of the Basle Committee. Furthermore, the paper analyses the 25 principles on banking supervision issued by the Basle Committee, as well as their diverse development in Colombia and Latin America by pertinent surveillance authorities of each country. Finally, the paper discusses the inflexibilities on banking supervision in particularly the operational work and the sanctionatory faculties of the supervisors with respect to the banks.
