In this paper, some practical strategies are proposed to the academic community, not only for the University and the faculty studied but also for the institutions which, having similar problems, might find an appropriate, relevant scenario. This proposal starts from the analysis of results found through research work done on the main causes of dropouts and academic mortality rates at the Faculty of Social Communication and Journalism of La Sabana University where, once such causes were identified, we undertook the task of implementing some retention strategies aimed at minimizing the indicators in a given time period. The research work was led by sociologist Ms Amparo Velez, Ph. D. , Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on School Desertion organized by La Sabana University for this study, where each one of the faculties have studied and analyzed their specific case. As it can be seen from this report, the case of the Social Communication and Journalism Faculty and its corresponding research unit were headed by Professor Daniel Fernando Lopez Jimenez, who carried out the study with the cooperation of a group of twelve students. The group worked for eighteen months, gathering information and applying specifically designed instruments.
