The characterization of the atmospheric electric activity in tropical countries is an undeniable important task for the suitable design of protection systems against their effects; certainly these regions present different characteristics with respect to other latitudes. This paper deals with the updating of the Isokeraunic Levels Map and the analyses of the data from 68 meteorology stations located along the Cuba Island from 1983 to 2002. It carries out the study of the spatial (maxima, average and global minima) and temporal (daily progression, monthly multi annual variation and multi annual by regions and whole Island) distribution of the electric storms occurrence, as well as the climatic aspects that support the behavior observed. Finally, the main effects of the atmospheric discharges in the Cuban society are presented analyzing the quantity of persons that have died from 1987 to 2003 and damages to the national economy due to outages of the power supply lines and other sectors.
