Spelling is not a matter of rules or norms but conventions, and that is what young people have to understand when they are taught to write (not grammar as it is normally misunderstood) because its goal is no other than to facilitate communication. It would be interesting, as pointed out by Garcia Marquez and Simon Rodriguez, to eliminate the letters that are not used in oral language considering Rodriguez’s idea that writing is the continuation of oral language. In order to show the need of a levelled written language, we present some paragraphs from Rodriguez’s writings showing its difficulties and pointing out that now this kind of writing in text messages from cellular phones and the internet is giving birth to a new branch of the Spanish language.
