This paper presents an explanatory model for the dynamics of the competitiveness of companies and national economies. The model is based on approaches and theories about competitiveness, as well as new theories of growth, the theory of technological capabilities and the notion of national innovation systems. It is argued that the competitiveness stems from a complex and dynamic interaction process of physical, economical, social, institutional, scientific and technological capabilities, scattered in the productive sector, in educational and technological development
