El envejecimiento de la poblacion plantea retos a los diferentes estamentos de la sociedad, especialmente en los servicios de seguridad social, salud, educacion, empleo y vivienda. En los sevicios de salud, los profesionales en general y los enfermeros en particular, al asumir el cuidado de los adultos mayores, desde las areas de asistencia a la enfermedad y de promocion de la salud, deben responder a esos retos. El presente articulo es una reflexion alrededor de las dimensiones del cuidado de enfermeria en relacion con el cuidado de las personas de edad, teniendo en cuenta, el envejecimiento de la poblacion provocado por los cambios demograficos (esperanza de vida individual, estructura familiar) y los temas de salud que afectan a este grupo, haciendo especial enfasis en la participacion social de los adultos mayores y sus familias. ABSTRACT The aging of the population raises challenges to the different estates from the society, specially in the services of social security, health, education, employment and housing. In the services of health, the professionals in general and the nurses in particular, when assuming the care of the greater adults, from the areas of attendance to the disease and promotion of the health, must respond to those challenges. The present article is a reflection around the dimensions of the care of nursing in relation around the dimensions of the care of nursing in relation to the care of the age people, considering, the againg of the population caused by the demographic changes (individual life expectancy, structures relative) and the health subjects that affect this group, doing special emphasis in the social participation of the greater adults and its families
