espanolEl objetivo del presente articulo, derivado del proyecto de investigacion �Nueva ruralidad y dicotomia campo ciudad�, es el de establecer un contrapunto entre el paisaje actual del Valle del Cauca, modelado (o deformado, segun se vera en las valoraciones presentadas) por un siglo de capitalismo e industrializacion, y el paisaje anterior a 1870. El articulo consta de tres partes. En la primera de ellas, se traza un recorrido literario por el paisaje y las formas de vida caracteristicas del siglo XIX. En la segunda, se narra el proceso de cambio que arranca con la integracion de la comarca en los mercados mundiales a traves de la colonizacion interior y la construccion del ferrocarril y del canal de Panama, asi como el proceso de especializacion en la produccion de cana de azucar y sus efectos derivados. En la tercera parte se concluye trazando una imagen negativa del paisaje actual, definido como �erial�. EnglishThe purpose of this article, which stems from a research project titled �A new rural setting and the countryside-city dichotomy�, is to provide a comparison of the current landscape in Valle del Cauca (which has been either shaped or defaced by a century of capitalism and industrialization as discussed below) and the landscape before 1870. It consists of the three following sections: the first section outlines a literary tour of the landscape and the typical life styles in the nineteenth century; the second section discusses the process of change that began with the integration of the region to global markets thanks to inland colonization and the construction of the railroad and the Panama Canal as well as specialization in sugar cane production and its associated effects; and the third section concludes with a negative picture of the current landscape which is defined as a wasteland.
