The purpose of this study is to characterize couples in the city of Cali, Colombia, united by civil or religious marriage, who have sustained stable and satisfying relationships for more than 10 years. Each member of the 50 no-clinical couples voluntarily completed a sociodemographic survey and the Pick and Andrade Marital Satisfaction Scale (1988). These couples had an average of 22 years of marriage, and were middle aged. No significant relationship was found between marital satisfaction and level of income, educational level, religious background or marital bond (civil or religious). Marital satisfaction in these couples was associated with coming from households where parents lived together and the couples positive perception of their parental marital bond. Men appeared more satisfied with the marital interaction while women appeared more satisfied with their husbands emotional reactions. These couples also found as essential factors to establish, maintain and promote a good live together, the recognition of the implications of living as a couple and building a loving bond. The results of this study point out that affective bonds in couples, are as important as the very well researched communication and problem-solving processes. Recommendations for clinical practice, psicoeducational work and future research are provided.
