ABSTRACT The issue of convergence has been widely discussed in the empirical literature in Colombia, and the debate has focused on the concern about the existing disparities regarding economic activity between Colombian departments. However, it is interesting to expand this discussion by using variables that determine the production level, such as human capital, a factor that may help explain the lack of economic convergence among departments. The purpose of this paper is to contrast the hypothesis of convergence of human capital in Colombia during the period 1993-2005. The article relies on a widely used methodology and on the data panel technique. The paper shows that, even though important differences persist between departments in average years of education, there is a trend towards convergence of human capital.
