This document presents a proposal for the development of research in the field of media arts. It presents a quick overview of the work of artistic research (mainly in Anglo-phone countries) over the past twenty years; a description of some of the arguments and counter-arguments against the possibility of investigating art; five avenues proposed for research in this area and, finally, some considerations on specific aspects of this type of investigation.
