WHAT DEGREE ARE CURRENTLY OBTAINING PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES IN COLOMBIA? ABSTRACT For a number of years, our younger physicians have been obtaining a bachelor´s degree from their schools, not the former doctorate in medicine. That way, they should not use the letters MD after their names but BM, LM or BS instead, for “bachelor” or “licensed” in medicine and/or surgery. Not only that, they should not be called doctors, for a doctorate is a post-graduate degree obtained some five years of study and research done after college graduation. Calling a licensed physician “doctor” is an extrapolate of the american “medical doctor”, but it is not an actual degree. Keywords: College degrees, doctorates, physician and surgeons.
