In order to assemble a hematological characterization 25 females (F; 758,4±362,5 g of weight and 60,5±0,7 cm of total length) and 12 males (M; 577,1±187,1 g y 49,8±4,9 cm) of Trans-Andean shovelnose catfish adult Sorubim cuspicaudus , captured in the Sinu river basin were examined. The total erithrocytes were of 8,3±2,0x106 F and 9,7±3,2x106 cel/mm3 M, thrombocytes 7,4±4,3x105cel/mm3 F 3,5±2,4x105cel/mm3 M and leucocytes in F were estimated in 53±39x103cel/mm3 and 43±16x103cel/mm3 in M. The differential count of leukocytes for F were 70,6±12,3% lymphocytes, 14,6±6,8% neutrophils, 11,8±8,0% monocytes, 3,28±3,7% basophils and 0,32±0,63% eosinophils, for M were 55,8±11,5% lymphocytes, 17,8±9,3% neutrophils, 20,0±7,4% monocytes, 5,4±3,1% basophils y 1,0±1,1% eosinophils. The hemoglobin was 9,4±2,3 g/dl and 10,5±2,3 g/dl, hematocrit 22,7±5,7% and 25,5±5,6% for F and M respectively. The erythrocyte index: Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were 11,5±2,2 fL and 12,2±5,7 fL; mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were 41,7±3,9 g/dl and 42,1±6,5 g/dl and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) 27,6±5,1 pg and 29,2±13,7 pg, for F and M, respectively. In the differential count of leukocytes statistical differences were found between F and M (P<0,05), the lymphocytes percentage in males was inferior to F, neutrophils and eosinophils percentage were superior in M than F. This suggests a greater sensibility from the M to the process of capture and handling, and there is no pathological signs which could be related to this changes in the differential count of leukocytes. All the fish were apparently healthy, and without pathology signs. The results obtained suggest that Trans-Andean shovelnose catfish hematology characteristics are in normal range for neotropical fish, apparently healthy. This study is the first report about hematological parameters in Trans-Andean shovelnose catfish.
