The movement of a mass subject to two supports by means of springs was studied using a video camera. With help of Adobe After Effects 6.0 software was obtained the video photos sequence. From this way was possible to determine the mass position in every picture as a function of time, finding the typical pattern in i ts movement. The movement was registered for more than one minute for every case, changing the initial condition of the two dimensional anharmonic oscillator. The analysis of images was realized in the following steps: the conversion of every image to 256 gray scale, a continuation the format of every new image was changed to ASCII code using the program Imagemagick. After it, using a program in C++ language the image was changed into binary format (white and black) in order to determine the mass position in every picture. Due to the large number of images the process was automated, fulfilling a script in Linux, which was execut ing each step for the set of photos. Finally, the path of the pa rticle and their speed was represented as a function of time. This method can be applied to similar experiments at mechanics labs.
