The Alzheimer type dementia (ATD) represents a 70% of the dementias that affect old people. It s a neurodegenerative disease that produces a significant cognitive deterioration in patients, and implies a progressive inability for the adequate functioning in daily life. Studies have had into account the cognitive deterioration, especially the memory process, which is more dramatic. Only in recent years scientists have begun to investigate the deterioration that may cause the disease at other levels like the recognition of the emotional facial expressions. The objective of this research is to analyze the recognition of the emotional facial expressions in patients with Alzheimer disease, in contrast with healthy people, and to determine if they have alterations in this type of recognition. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Two groups, one of 22 patients with mild and moderate Alzheimer disease, and other group of 22 people without Alzheimer disease. The MMSE was used to diagnose the level of severity and Paul Ekman s Pofa Kit face test, to evaluate the recognition of the emotional facial expressions. RESULTS: significant differences were found in the global recognition between the control group and the experimental group. The only emotion that remained was happiness still in moderate levels of the disease. Anger and sadness were affected in the mild level, and the recognition of fear expression was changed only in the mild levels of the disease.
