The belief of a Standard English as the legitimate model has been questioned over the last years, due to the fact that, from a sociolinguistic perception, accent is marked by characteristics of pronunciation related to the speaker’s region and social identity. Thus, talking about a Standard English as the legitimate model excludes the diversity and multiculturalism that characterizes the World Englishes (WE). The purose of this study was to explore the perceptions about accent of a group of 58 students, enrolled in the last year of the English Teacher Education program at the Universidad de Los Andes Tachira, Venezuela. Action Research was used as the method and the interview and questionnaire as the instruments for data collection. The preliminary results show ambivalence in the participants’ perceptions about their accent in English. The great majority was not familiar with, or had not been exposed to different English accents. This reason may explain why they showed a noticeable preference for adopting a British or American accent. In conclusion, prospective English have to become aware of their legitimacy as non-native speaking teachers whose linguistic goal must be oral and written intelligibility and not the search for a Standard accent.
