Abstract:

PURPOSE To describe clinical and epidemiological characteristics of children with glaucoma at Fundación Oftalmológica Nacional (FON), Bogotá - Colombia. METHODS This retrospective descriptive study enrolled patients between 0 and 16 years of age diagnosed with pediatric glaucoma, whether primary or secondary, with a minimum of 3 months of follow-up, between 2005 and 2015. RESULTS 91 patients (145 eyes), 46. 9% girls and 53. 1% boys. All cases were classified according to the 2013 childhood glaucoma consensus classification. Primary Congenital Glaucoma (PCG) was the most prevalent. Gender distribution was similar for PCG and Secondary Pediatric Glaucoma (SPG), but not for the Juvenile Open Angle Glaucoma (JOP). The mean age of diagnosis was 4. 7 years, except for PCG, which was less then one year. Within PCG, 17 eyes received surgery. 56. 53% had trabeculotomy + trabeculectomy. In the SPG, 23. 8% had surgery. From this group, 40% had trabeculectomy and 40% Ahmed’s valve implantation. Patients with JOP did not require surgery. Most of the patients with PCG treated at the institution were considered successful. The cup/disk ratio had an average decrease of 0. 4. Complications were reported in 4 cases. CONCLUSIONS Fundación Oftalmológica Nacional is an Ophthalmology referral center in Colombia. Among the patients who received surgery, the majority were successful. Improvement in cup/disk ratio was evident. Complications were similar to those reported in other studies. Although there is no population data available, Pediatric Glaucoma, accounted for less than 2% of the pediatric population received at FON. In Colombia, long-term follow-up of these patients is difficult.
