Abstract:

Introduction: In critically ill patients transfusion therapy is a common practice. Within the studies have not included the cities at higher elevations. This study aims to determine the levels of hemoglobin which is being transfused to patients in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital Foundation Santa Fe de Bogotá at 2600 meters above sea level, to determine whether hemoglobin levels to which transfused to our height are optimal. Methods: A retrospective study of patients who were hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital Foundation Santa Fe de Bogotá from June 1, 2011 until May 31, 2012 was performed. Results: Of analyzed records 13.8% of patients had hemoglobin ≤ 7 and all were transfused with red blood cells, and in the range of 7.1 to 9 is the highest percentage of transfusion. It was observed that patients with hemoglobin ≤ 7 are 18,8 times higher risk of death, which was statistically significant (p: 0.000). Conclusions: We found that transfusion therapy in the intensive care unit, is performed according to recommendations given by the management guidelines universally accepted. Among the results of our study we can highlight a higher mortality rate in patients in whom transfusion therapy is established with a hemoglobin level below 7g/dl
