Abstract:

Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:msub><a:mi>ν</a:mi><a:mi>μ</a:mi></a:msub></a:math>-nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><c:mrow><c:mn>2</c:mn><c:mtext> </c:mtext><c:mtext> </c:mtext><c:mi>GeV</c:mi><c:mo>/</c:mo><c:mi>c</c:mi></c:mrow></c:math> in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><e:mrow><e:msub><e:mrow><e:mi>ν</e:mi></e:mrow><e:mrow><e:mi>μ</e:mi></e:mrow></e:msub></e:mrow></e:math> energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><g:msub><g:mi>ν</g:mi><g:mi>μ</g:mi></g:msub></g:math> charged-current (CC) interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) reactions is identified by the cross section excess relative to predictions for <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><i:msub><i:mi>ν</i:mi><i:mi>μ</i:mi></i:msub></i:math>-nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2-hole processes are rated by <k:math xmlns:k="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><k:msup><k:mi>χ</k:mi><k:mn>2</k:mn></k:msup></k:math> comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><m:msub><m:mi>ν</m:mi><m:mi>μ</m:mi></m:msub></m:math> CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Shortfalls are observed in neutrino generator predictions obtained using the theory-based València and SuSAv2 2p2h models. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
