Objectives: To develop a method for the application of suppositories based on recommendations from various sources. Methods: A scoping review of documents containing instructions for rectal suppositories aimed at patients and healthcare professionals. Eligibility criteria included documents with instructions for the use of suppositories from different sources. The selection of evidence involved two independent reviewers. The data extraction process was conducted using a standardized, pre-tested form. Discrepancies were resolved through discussion. Results: A total of 217 references were identified, with 70 documents included after applying the eligibility/exclusion criteria. The sources included Nursing/Pharmacy textbooks (6), Micromedex (54), automated searches from PUBMED, Scielo and Cochrane (1), and medication leaflets from Bulas Med (9). The methods obtained showed significant variation in content and the number of steps, specifically: Nursing or Pharmacy textbooks (57 steps); Micromedex (14 steps); and Bulas Med (19 steps). The final method, aligning all recommendations, comprised 19 steps. Conclusions: Instructions for rectal suppositories vary significantly across sources. It is suggested that further validation studies be conducted on the method developed in this scoping review.
