This chapter arises from the need to contribute to constructing a new field of knowledge and intervention, such as healthy university environments. The reflections presented here are based on systematic literature reviews and empirical work developed by the authors in their academic and administrative careers in the university field. The theoretical and methodological proposal presented is based on incorporating complexity from a holistic paradigm of health, highlighting the critical elements for universities that take on this challenge to build healthy environments conducive to life where they are developed and where they impact different communities. It is based on existing knowledge and documented and known experiences to define the approaches, contents, and strategies of the interventions that can promote healthy and health-promoting universities. Finally, the benefits of building university environments for life are shown, and some future lines of research that progressively structure this new category are highlighted.
