Abstract To support a global technology company’s sustainability objectives, an internal business group within the company has concentrated its sustainability efforts on providing impactful and long-lasting initiatives to benefit local communities. The paper provides case studies of country-specific voluntary sustainability teams of the business group that have been undertaken to benefit local communities and company priorities in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The paper also describes how a framework was developed to guide teams of employee volunteers. The first step in the process was to identify committed employee volunteers to lead local sustainability initiatives. The volunteers were provided with an initial framework and key directions to follow. A year after establishing the voluntary teams, new teams were provided with a comprehensive playbook which enabled the teams to deliver diverse projects faster and with higher impact. Additionally, building diverse local teams ensured that a range of perspectives were reflected in the identification and prioritization of initiatives. To best serve the needs of the local communities, it was important to build long-term collaborations with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) relevant to the selected priorities. The structured approach to sustainability initiatives helped the teams focus on actions that matter the most to local communities. This led to the establishment of long-lasting relationships with NGOs. Examples include supporting young individuals in foster care through skill-sharing sessions and internship opportunities within the company, supporting local community business enterprises, and providing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education opportunities for young people. The engagement and enthusiasm of the employee volunteers have been maintained through observing the positive impact their efforts have made on the local communities, enabled by the clear impact-oriented guidance provided. Across several countries, this network of volunteers has onboarded almost 15% of the business group’s employees and their families to participate in sustainability actions, with over 40 initiatives completed in 2023.
