Abstract Introduction Sleep disorders are increasingly prevalent in contemporary society. Many of these disorders are related to increased body weight. Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, also known as Pickwick syndrome, is a respiratory disorder that affects some people with obesity and can also have an impact on their work performance Methods A literature search was carried out using the words: obesity, Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, Pickwick syndrome, obesity, work accidents; showing that in effect this series of conditions derived from poor sleep quality increase the risk of presenting comorbidities, as well as presenting incidents at work. The foregoing with a view to strengthening this management at the National University of Colombia, in Bogotá. Results From this analysis, it was possible to conclude that workers diagnosed with obesity frequently have sleep disorders, which decreases their alertness even for work activities. This represents a huge risk whenever they face high-risk activities such as driving, working at heights, working in confined spaces, exposure to chemicals, etc. Discussion Rigorous control of variables such as body weight is required, especially in workers with high-risk activities. We should be concerned about the workers and their habits both inside and outside the companies and in this way try to influence their culture and health habits. Conclusions From the point of view of occupational risk management, it is essential to implement wellness programs and healthy habits in companies, as well as to continue working on public policies that prevent the development of obesity and metabolic disorders from an early age.
