Background: Vision loss due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) significantly affects patients' quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the disease burden due to visual impairment in Colombia, including nAMD and DME.Methods: We estimated the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).DALYs represent the years of life lost due to premature death (YLL) and years lived with disability (YLD).nAMD and DME are not a direct or underlying cause of death, so they do not produce YLL.Therefore, DALYs are equivalent to YLDs.Epidemiological data were obtained from local databases and medical literature. Results: In 2021, there were 258,594 DALYs due to low vision.Three percent of all DALYs (8,284) were attributed to nAMD (3,055) and DME (5,229).DME blindness represents 52% of the total burden. Conclusions: Burden due to visual impairment would represent 3% of Colombia's total burden and would rank eighth, highlighting the need to prioritize visual health for the healthcare system.
